Iowa CrossRoads Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club

Membership: For the 2019 calendar year, the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC had 30 paid memberships, plus 26 auxiliary (spousal) members, a loss of 14 paid or free-trial memberships and five spousal memberships since 2018. Three major reasons contributed to this significant loss in regional membership: 1) the expiration of the free one-year trial memberships; 2) the significant decline in the health of our aging members; and 3) death.

Regional Dues: For the 2019 calendar year, regional dues remained at $15 per person (auxiliary or spousal memberships were free of charge) for members receiving our monthly newsletter, The Voice via electronic e-mail; and $30 per person for members opting for newsletter delivery via USPS. Beginning in 2020, annual regional membership fees will remain the same for members receiving our newsletter via electronic e-mail, but will increase to $36 for members opting for newsletter delivery via USPS. This is due to the increasing printing and postage costs (which amount to $35.60 per person per year). Karen Pittman, our former membership chair, continues to serve the club by printing and mailing our monthly newsletter to those members who have opted for traditional USPS delivery.

Financial Strength: Since the death of our Regional Treasurer, David Twombley, in December 2018, I (Steven Fox) have served as Regional Club Treasurer. Funds received from membership renewals have allowed our region’s operating account to remain financially solvent throughout the 2019 calendar year and into 2020. Currently (as of November 30, 2019), we have $846.52 in our operating-checking account, plus another $5,221.66 in a Certificate of Deposit yielding 2.75% APR at Veridian Credit Union of Ankeny, Iowa. Since 2005, our regional club treasury has donated over $15,000 to the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum and Research Center (CLCMRC). This amount is in addition to individual contributions made independently by our regional club members.

National Representation: The National Representative for the Iowa CrossRoads Region is long-standing CLC member, Jim Caffrey. Jim attended various board meetings at the CLC Grand National in Louisville, Kentucky last June and has kept us informed and updated on news affecting National CLC. Jim plans to attend the upcoming winter board meeting.

Regional Newsletter: Our regional newsletter, The Voice, is published 11 times per year (once every month, except January and February are combined into one “Winter” issue). Topics covered in our monthly newsletter include club officer contact information; the Director’s Column (which covers in detail the previous month’s touring event with accompanying photographs); minutes of the previous month’s regional meeting (usually held at the touring event); an Event Calendar for the entire year; a detailed flyer regarding the next upcoming touring event; a monthly article authored and/or presented by our webmaster (Mr. Gary Wright) or myself (Steven Fox) relating to the history or characteristics of the Cadillac and LaSalle automobile marquees; our Members in the News segment (which covers birthdays, anniversaries, get-well wishes, any awards or achievements obtained by our local members, and personal messages submitted by our membership); information about the next CLC Grand National and Cadillac Fall Festival; membership renewal reminders and related information. I have served as Regional Photographer since 2005, but have combined that effort with my role as Newsletter Editor beginning back in January 2015. Our monthly newsletter continues to receive high praise from both our regional and national members. For three years in a row (2016 to 2018), our regional newsletter, The Voice, has won the Golden Quill Award presented by Old Cars Weekly.

Regional Web page: Beginning back in 2015, the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC has enlisted the help of fellow regional club member, Gary Wright, to design and maintain a new web page for our region. His creative efforts are nothing short of outstanding! Due to Gary’s fine efforts, our website has received the CLC Website Merit Award for both 2017 and 2018! Plus, his contacts in the computer-services industry have allowed us to save over $150 annually in web page hosting fees. Gary continues to update our web page with news, stories and events on a monthly basis. Since January 1, 2018, Gary has also served as Membership Chair for the Iowa CrossRoads region, replacing Karen Pittman. Since Gary’s web page design, regional members can now pay their regional membership dues online via our web page’s PayPal site. Please feel free to check out our regional club web page at:

2019 Regional Activities: I have served as the Activities Chair for the Iowa CrossRoads Region since September 2009. I gather input from other club members as to events they want to do and incorporate those recommendations into an annual touring calendar for the club. During 2019, our club participated in 12 touring events with attendance ranging from two to 20 people per event. This resulted in an average participation of 10 members per event in 2019, an decrease from an average participation of 11 members per event in 2018. Our regional touring events for the 2019 calendar year were as follows:

January: Traditionally, the Iowa CrossRoads CLC has not held a January event so as to better enjoy our winter solace in the comfort of our own home. I saw no need to break with that restful tradition in 2019!

February: This year, our traditional Valentine’s Luncheon to honor the ladies of our club was held at Trellis Cafe inside the Greater Des Moines Botanical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Thirteen club members were in attendance. Beautiful floral bouquets for the ladies and a tour of this fine indoor botanical garden followed after the luncheon. Excluding travel time, this was a two-hour social event. This special venue was proposed by club member Karen Pittman, and special thanks to her for the candies and flowers!

March: On Saturday, March 30, 2019, 12 Iowa CrossRoads club members toured the newly-expanded Iowa Gold Star Military Museum on the grounds of Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa. Lunch followed at Radish Dining in Grimes. Excluding travel time, this was a 3.5-hour touring event. A tour of the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum was proposed by regional club director, Steve Fox; and lunch at Radish Dining was proposed by fellow club member, Linda Wold.

April: On Saturday, April 20 (Easter weekend), six members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC and two guests made a 90-minute tour of the Templeton Rye Distillery in Templeton, Iowa. Before the tour, an excellent lunch was served at Chuck’s Bar & Grill in Coon Rapids. Excluding travel time, this was a 3-hour dining and touring event. This event was proposed by fellow club member, Lyle Dahl.

May: Six members and three guests attended our annual spring weekend retreat at Lake Okoboji and Spirit Lake in beautiful northwest Iowa occurred on the Friday-Saturday weekend of May 10-11, 2019. Activities included tours of the Dickinson County Nature Center, the Winchester Museum House, and the Clark Historical Museum. Friday dining sites included the Mill Creek Restaurant and Minerva’s; and hotel accommodations were provided by the Oakwood Inn, the fabulous bed and breakfast where we stayed the last three years. This annual event was initially proposed by fellow club members Eric & Patt Anderson, who continue to graciously handle all of the touring arrangements for this annual spring getaway. A special thanks to them for all their efforts!

Mid-June: Jim Caffrey and Steve Fox attended the 2019 CLC Grand National in Louisville, Kentucky that was hosted by the Indiana Region of the CLC during the week of June 11-15, 2019. About 650 CLC members attended the event and 175 cars were displayed on the show field. Touring events included Churchill Downs, the Brown Hotel, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Frazier’s Museum in downtown Louisville, the Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark Distilleries, Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear, the National Corvette Museum, the Tom Jones Car Collection, the Belle of Louisville riverboat cruise, the Bernheim Forest, and much more.

Late-June: Our traditional, classic-car show ‘n shine that is held annually at the Olmsted-Urban House Ice Cream Social & Open House occurred on Sunday, June 30, 2019. Ten regional club members were in attendance and showed off their magnificent automobiles at this very tranquil, 1920’s style homemade pie and ice cream social that features an old-fashioned Dixieland band duo and a tour of the 1904 historical Olmsted-Urban House. Excluding travel time, this was a 2½-hour social event. This is an annual Iowa CrossRoads regional club event.

July: Seventeen members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC participated in a joint gathering with the Hawkeye Chapter of the Buick Club of America at the farmstead of Gene and Betty Upstill in Gilbert, Iowa on Saturday, July 20, 2019. Over the past several years, this has been a joint annual event that is thoroughly enjoyed by both clubs. A special thanks goes out to Gene and Betty for their generous hospitality, which we graciously accept every year!

August: Nine members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC went on a two-day, overnight weekend retreat in NE Iowa on Friday-Saturday, August 23-24, 2019. Stops included the Plaza Antique Mall, Breitbach’s, Stove Nut Museum, Promised Land Winery, Pikes Peak State Park, and Effigy Mounds National Monument. Accommodations were at The Landing in Guttenberg. A special thanks to Dean & Vickie Stoltenberg for their efforts in making the arrangements for this event.

Early-Sept: Five members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC participated in the fabulous Des Moines Concours d’Elegance, the annual celebration promoting the art and design of the automobile. This year’s event was held on the weekend of September 7-8, 2019. Exhibitors were invited to attend an optional driving event on Saturday morning (September 7) and the exhibitor’s banquet at the Wellmark Building in downtown Des Moines later that evening. On Sunday, September 8, a display of 162 of the finest automobiles and motorcycles from our exhibitors lined the streets in a record 17 classes along the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines. This is an annual Iowa CrossRoads regional club automotive social event.

Late-Sept: Two Iowa CrossRoads CLC members attended the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum’s Fall Festival at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan that was held on the weekend of September 26-28, 2019. The fall festival is an annual weekend touring event hosted by the West Michigan Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club.

October: On October 11-12, 2019, ten members of the IowaRoads CLC participated in a weekend trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to tour the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed and the private car (and other) collections of fellow club members, Dick & Sue Boswell. Meals and desserts were served at Quaker Steak & Lube in Council Bluffs, as well as the Stauffer’s Café and the Boswell home in Lincoln. This weekend event was proposed by fellow club member, Eric Anderson and a special thanks goes out to Dick & Sue for serving as our gracious hosts for this fine event.

November: Due to inclement and early winter weather, our plan to travel the White Pole Road, a 26-mile scenic byway that extends from Adair to Dexter along old U.S. Highway 6, and our visit to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter and All Saints Catholic Cathedral in Stuart, was postponed until Spring 2020. This event was proposed by fellow Iowa CrossRoads club member Lyle Dahl.

December: Our annual Christmas Luncheon and gift exchange will occur at 12:30 pm. on Friday, December 6 at Tursi’s Latin King Restaurant in Des Moines and 20 regional club members are scheduled to attend. The Latin King has been in Des Moines since 1947 and is a magnificent dining experience. This is an annual Iowa CrossRoads regional club social event.
