STATE OF THE REGION REPORT (2017)
Iowa CrossRoads Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club
Membership: For the 2017 calendar year, the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC had 42 paid memberships, plus 28 auxiliary (spousal) members, a loss of one auxiliary member due to death since 2016. In 2017, Karen Pittman (wife of our previous Regional Director, Jim Pittman), once again graciously served as our Membership Chair for the Iowa CrossRoads Region and I sincerely appreciate her invaluable efforts.
Regional Dues: For the 2017 calendar year, regional dues remained at $15 per person (auxiliary or spousal memberships were free of charge) for members receiving our monthly newsletter, The Voice via electronic e-mail; and $30 per person for members opting for newsletter delivery via USPS.
Financial Strength: Fellow club member, David Twombley, has been serving as our Regional Treasurer for many years and I continue to value his hard work. Funds received from membership renewals have allowed our region’s operating account to remain financially solvent throughout the 2017 calendar year and into 2018. Currently, we have $279 in our operating-checking account (an amount that will increase as 2018 dues are processed and deposited), plus another $5,000 in a high-yielding CD at Veridian Credit Union. Since 2005, our regional club treasury has donated over $15,000 to the CLCMRC. This amount is in addition to individual contributions made independently by our regional club members.
National Representation: The National Representative for the Iowa CrossRoads Region is our former Director, Jim Pittman. Jim keeps us informed and updated on news affecting the National CLC and the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum and Research Center (CLCMRC) on a monthly basis. His continued service to the Iowa CrossRoads Region is much appreciated and invaluable to our club, both locally and nationally. Beginning January 1, 2018, Jim will retire from his duties as our national representative, being replaced by fellow Iowa CrossRoads CLC member, Jim Caffrey.
Regional Newsletter: Our regional newsletter, The Voice, is published 11 times per year (once every month, except January and February are combined into one “Winter” issue). Topics covered in our monthly newsletter include club officer contact information; the Director’s Column (which covers in detail the previous month’s touring event with accompanying photographs); minutes of the previous month’s regional meeting (usually held at the touring event); an Event Calendar for the entire year; a detailed flyer regarding the next upcoming touring event; a monthly article authored by our webmaster (Mr. Gary Wright) relating to the history of the Cadillac and LaSalle automobile marquees; our Members in the News segment (which covers birthdays, anniversaries, get-well wishes, any awards or achievements obtained by our local members, and personal messages submitted by our membership); information about the next CLC Grand National and Cadillac Fall Festival; membership renewal reminders and related information. I have served as Regional Photographer for many years, but have combined that effort with my role as Newsletter Editor beginning back in January 2015. Our monthly newsletter continues to receive high praise from both our regional and national members. In 2016 and 2017, our regional newsletter, The Voice, won the Golden Quill Award presented by Old Cars Weekly.
Regional Webpage: Beginning back in 2015, the Iowa CrossRoads Region of the CLC has enlisted the help of fellow regional club member, Gary Wright, to design and maintain a new webpage for our region. His creative efforts are nothing short of outstanding! Plus, his contacts in the computer-services industry have allowed us to save over $150 annually in webpage hosting fees. Gary continues to update our webpage with news, stories and events on a monthly basis. Beginning January 1, 2018, Gary will also serve as Membership Chair for the Iowa CrossRoads region, replacing the retiring Karen Pittman. Regional members can also pay their regional membership dues online via our webpage’s PayPal site. Please feel free to check out our regional club webpage at: http://www.iowacrossroadsregion.org.
2017 Regional Activities: I have served as the Activities Chair for the Iowa CrossRoads Region since September 2009. I gather input from other club members as to events they want to do and incorporate those recommendations into an annual touring calendar for the club. During 2017, our club participated in 14 touring events with attendance ranging from one (at the CLC Grand National in Washington, D.C.) to 17 people per event. This was an average participation of 10 members per event, a decrease from an average participation of 11 members in 2016, primarily due to the deteriorating health our aging membership.
Our regional touring events for the 2017 calendar year were as follows:
January: Traditionally, the Iowa CrossRoads CLC has not held a January event so as to better enjoy our winter solace in the comfort of our own home. I saw no need to break with that restful tradition in 2017.
February: This year, 13 members and one guest attended our traditional Valentine Luncheon at the Lemon Tree Teahouse and Restaurant in Newton, Iowa on Saturday, February 11, 2017. Excluding travel time, this was a 2-hour social event. This event is an annual regional club event to honor the ladies of our club!
March: Our scheduled tour of the Iowa-80 Trucking Museum for Saturday, March 11, 2017 was cancelled due to lack of planned attendance.
April: Ten members and one guest met for lunch at Robert’s Bakery Treats and Treasures, followed by a Spring Antiquing Adventure in Walnut, Iowa on a chilly, wet afternoon on Saturday, April 29, 2017. This event, proposed by fellow club member Nora Schlenker, was a full-day social event.
Mid-May: Fifteen Iowa CrossRoads CLC club members and two guests participated in overnight event up at Lake Okoboji in beautiful NW Iowa from Friday, May 12 to Saturday, May 13. Weekend attractions included the Okoboji Classic Cars Museum & Jim Caffrey’s Car Collection in Milford, Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum in Arnold’s Park, and a tour of John Van Der Haag’s huge truck, tractor, car and memorabilia collection in Sanborn. This weekend event included dinner at the Gingham Inn followed by an overnight stay at the Oakwood Inn Bed & Breakfast. This weekend event was proposed by fellow club members Eric & Patt Anderson, Jim Caffrey, and Jim & Karen Pittman. We plan to make this weekend event an annual spring tradition in our regional club.
Late-May: Seven club members attended the ATHS National Truck Show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on a very wet Saturday (May 27, 2017). This half-day touring event was proposed by fellow club member, Dean Stoltenberg.
June: On Sunday, June 25, seven club members participated in our traditional, annual classic-car show ‘n shine that was held at the Olmsted-Urban House Ice Cream Social & Open House. Club members showed off their magnificent automobiles at this very tranquil, 1920’s style homemade pie and ice cream social that features an old-fashioned Dixieland band trio and a tour of the 1904 Olmsted-Urban House. Excluding travel time, this is an annual 2-3 hour social event.
July: Our July touring adventure was a trip out to Adams County in SW Iowa on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Eight club members participated in the event which included lunch and tours of Johnny Carson’s Birthplace, the Corning Opera House and R&S Collectibles Showroom. This well-liked, full-day touring event was proposed by our membership chair, Karen Pittman.
Early-August: This year, the CLC Grand National was hosted by the Potomac Region and took place in Washington, D.C. from July 31 through August 5, 2017. Fellow club member Jim Caffrey was in attendance.
Mid-August: Fellow club members Gene and Betty Upstill hosted a joint potluck lunch gathering with the Buick Club of Iowa at their farmstead in Gilbert, Iowa on Saturday, August 12. Thirteen club members were in attendance at this half-day event.
Late-August: On Saturday, August 19, three Iowa CrossRoads club members toured the show field of the AACA Mississippi Valley Region Central Fall Meet that was held at the Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf. This all-day touring event was proposed by our webmaster, Gary Wright.
Early-Sept: Seven Iowa CrossRoads club members participated in the fabulous Des Moines Concours d’Elegance, the annual celebration promoting the art and design of the automobile. This year’s event was held on the weekend of September 9-10, 2017. Exhibitors were invited to attend an optional driving event on Saturday morning and the exhibitor’s banquet at the Wellmark Building in downtown Des Moines that evening. On Sunday, September 10, a display of 154 fine automobiles lined the streets at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines. The “Best of Show” award went to beautifully-restored, silver 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. This is an annual Iowa CrossRoads regional club weekend social event.
Late-Sept: The LaSalle marquee was featured during the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum’s Fall Festival at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan on the weekend of September 22-24, 2017. This is an annual weekend touring event hosted by the West Michigan Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club and was attended by six of our regional club members.
October: Eight members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC and one guest met for lunch at the Ronneburg Restaurant in Amana for our traditional fall luncheon and tour of this quaint German town on Saturday, October 14. This fall gathering in the Amana Colonies is a full-day Iowa CrossRoads biennial event.
November: Ten members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC met for lunch at TA’s Country Pride Restaurant in Brooklyn and later toured the impressive Kinze Factory and Innovation Center in Williamsburg, Iowa on Monday, November 13, 2017. This full-day touring event was proposed by our regional director, Steve Fox, and came recommended by fellow club member, Dean Stoltenberg.
December: This year, our annual Christmas Luncheon was held at the Ankeny Diner in Ankeny, Iowa on Saturday, December 2, 2017. Sixteen club members and one guest were in attendance. Fellow club members, Lyle and Lori Dahl arranged a private dining room for this annual 2-hour dining and gift exchange event (excluding travel time).
